Top Questions:

How to join the troop? Just ask the leaders from the contacts page !

Will my scout have fun?  Our troop’s mission slogan is, “Working for fun”.  Our boys know that to really have fun takes a little work, planning and leadership.  Out of achievement comes fun.  Our scouts plan each meeting and outing to have lots of fun.  Our scouts, leaders and scout families have a wide variety of expertise and hobbies which makes camp outs, meetings and pursuit of merit badges a fun, exciting and rewarding experience for your scout.  The adults have even to be known to have fun once in a while to.

What type of leadership does Troop 1914 have?  Even though Troop 1914 is a relatively new troop, Glen Willis is an experienced Scoutmaster.  Assistant Scout Masters Keith McCain, a retired Air Force officer and a wiz with knots, and Randy Allen a McKinney School teacher are great additions to the troop leadership.  The first thing that jumps out at you when you first meet Glen, Keith and Randy is they truly love being scout leaders.  They encourage the scout to safely leave their comfort zone, to experience and learn new things.  In doing so, the leaders give the scout the gentle nudge of encouragement, and then step back to allow the scout to safely make some mistakes and grow with them to accomplish their goals.

Will my scout be involved with the community?  Yes.  With our Troop’s motto being “Just Do Something!” service is one of the Troop’s major expectations – give something back to the community - especially our OLA Parish; be a good citizen of the community, state, country, and the Earth.  The troop will get many chances to give back to the community.  There will be Eagle projects (2 in progress) as well as general community projects that will be made available to the boys.  The boys will learn that just one person; just one boy can make a difference.

Will my scout be an Eagle Scout some day?  That is the goal for each of the 1914 scouts.  It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to earn an Eagle Scout rank.  Not all scouts will.  If a scout is to earn his Eagle, it will require him to leave his comfort zone many times in order to step out and pursue rank advancement and badges.  Glen, an Eagle Scout himself, has a great program to encourage each scout to manage his time and pursue his dream.  The adults and your boy’s fellow scouts will serve as mentors and sources of encouragement to pursue advancement.  The important thing about your scout’s journey through the scouting ranks - it will be your son’s own.  He will earn his way toward each rank and badge at his pace, have fun and take pride doing it.

Does the troop have good support and backing for long term success?  Yes.  The troop is backed by a number of organizations that are truly dedicated to see this troop succeed for the long run.  First, OLA pastor:  Msgr. John Bell backs the troop 100%.  He is a past BSA Chaplain for the Diocese of Dallas and a staunch supporter for the formation of the troop.  Msgr. Bell has graciously made available meeting facilities and the general support of the parish.  Also, other organizations are equally committed.  The OLA council of the Knights of Columbus includes the troop in its annual budget plus also gives plenty of moral support (many Knights have strong past or present Boy Scout ties).
